The World Wide Technology Championship is a PGA TOUR FedExCup Fall event at El Cardonal at Diamante in Los Cabos, Mexico, with Mexico storylines, resort-course strategy, late-season status pressure, and El Cardonal leaderboard movement in play.
Chris Kirk set the opening-round pace at El Cardonal at Diamante, firing a bogey-free 9-under 63 to take a one-shot lead over Nick Dunlap and Zac Blair in the 2026 World Wide Technology Championship. Low scoring spread throughout the 120-player field on the wide, rain-softened course in Los Cabos, Mexico.
CaddyBytes 🏆 Round 1 Recap: Kirk produced the cleanest card of the day with nine birdies and no bogeys. He found every fairway, missed only one green and made more than 150 feet of putts. His most memorable conversion came from long range at the par-3 16th, and five birdies over his final seven holes carried him home in 31 for a 63.
Nick Dunlap and Zac Blair answered with matching 8-under 64s. Dunlap again showed how quickly scores can drop at El Cardonal, while Blair closed especially well, making four birdies across his final five holes to finish his own bogey-free round just one shot off the lead.
Five players settled into a tie for fourth at 7 under. Matthieu Pavon continued his recent strong play with a bogey-free 65, Harry Hall used a sharp middle stretch to reach the same number, and Taylor Montgomery, Kensei Hirata and Ben James joined them two shots behind Kirk.
The first-round Top 10 and ties reached all the way to 16 players. Peter Malnati, Ryan Gerard, Blades Brown, Karl Vilips, Joe Highsmith, Alejandro Tosti, Beau Hossler and Patton Kizzire each opened with a 6-under 66, leaving a tightly packed group only three shots off the lead.
Round 1 complete: Chris Kirk leads by one after a bogey-free 63. Eight players share ninth place, expanding the Top 10 scoreboard to 16 players.

Leaderboard note: Round 1 was suspended by darkness with four players still on the course and completed Friday morning. Kirk retained the one-shot advantage when the opening round was finished.
Round 2 watch: With 16 players separated by only three strokes, the lead is vulnerable. Kirk begins Round 2 with Dunlap and Blair immediately behind him and a five-player group at 7 under ready to apply pressure.
FedExCup Fall pressure: Kirk entered the week outside the top 100 in the FedExCup Fall standings, making his fast start especially important. Blair and Dunlap also arrived needing a strong week, adding a late-season status storyline to an already crowded leaderboard.
Defending champion watch: Ben Griffin opened with a 2-under 70. The defending champion starts Round 2 seven shots behind Kirk but remains within reach on a course where birdie runs can develop quickly.
Round 1 takeaway: El Cardonal rewarded aggressive play, controlled approaches and confident putting. Kirk did all three best in the opening round, but the depth of the group directly behind him sets up a Round 2 in which one hot stretch could quickly reshape the top of the leaderboard.
